Is breastfeeding an effective contraception? Though research has proved that breastfeeding suppresses fertility, many women have experienced either themselves or other women becoming pregnant while breastfeeding Lactational amenorrhoea method is a temporary method of contraception.
Therefore, a lady must also use some other method of contraception while breastfeeding.
Contraceptive devices that can be used while breastfeeding are:

  • Barrier methods

  • Intrauterine devices

  • Injectables

  • Minipills

Avoid using Oral Contraception containing both estrogen and progesterone as the combination decreases breast milk production.
You are safe using only Lactational Amenorrhoea Method if all 3 requisites are met:

  • You havenít had menses since delivery.

  • Not more than 6months have passed since your delivery.

Remember that once you start weaning the child, breastfeeding will not be enough to prevent pregnancy.

3-15 % - conceive before the first post delivery menstruation
